Seneca!
Where the Logging Was Done. |

The Seneca elementary school is on the left (with columns); building is still in use today. Today, the post office stands on the corner just left of the car on the far right. Some of the original houses remain but Seneca's population today is not what it was in the 1930s. |

Seneca family houses are on the outer edge. The buildings in the foreground appear to be bunkhouses.
In addition to this housing, there was Camp 1, of which only a very few photos exist. |

Camp 1, at least part of the staff. Cookhouse may have been building on right. As you can see, this was a well runand tidy operation. All of Mr. Hines' efforts were so run. |

At first glance you may think this is a mill site but it is not. These are "the shops" at Seneca. Mostly railroad associated. Don't forget, Hines operated a complete railway system between Seneca and Hines. This was not just a logging road but a full-fledged "common carrier."
Some of the railbed can still be seen south of Seneca. |

"Man buses." On these "crummies" the married men of Seneca road to their jobs in the woods. I suspect that Mr. Hines' "crummies" were not very crummy. |

A log train. How many a day traveled between Seneca and Hines will be toldeventually (that means that the figure is not in my current memory). |

After roads were built from Hines into the Ochoco National Forest (Snow Mountain District) trucks delivered the logs to the mill.
These are "off road" trucks which carried much heavier loads than road trucks. Bunks on these trucks were up to 12 feet wide. And a road truck's bunks were . . . . |

Bear Valley Store, consisting of a store, tavern, movie house (named after Mr. Barnes wife, Olive) and more. Built by Barnes, bought by Hines, sold to others, burned, not rebuilt. What a loss (story to follow). |

Bear Valley Lodge. A Hines building for single men. This building is still standing and is in private ownership. Current owner is "fixing it up" for maybe a b&b? Beautiful building, inside and out. Trees now grow across the front of the building next to the road. |

#1400, just out of annual overhaul. |
