On May 30, 2003, the Seneca School Foundation announced the selection of the first winner of the Seneca Logger Memorial Scholarship, Alec Oliver of Bear Valley. Alec, son of J.C. and Kathryn Oliver, was presented with a certificate for the $500- scholarship during the 8th Grade graduation exercise held at the Seneca School on June 10.

This year’s scholarship was made possible through contributions from the families of two of the original members of the Seneca Loggers Softball Team of the 1930's, Lloyd (Butter) Shields, now living in Bend, Oregon and Kenneth McGhee, of Milton-Freewater, who passed away in 1990. As one of two of the surviving members of the team, Butter Shields made the presentation of the scholarship certificate on behalf all of his former teammates.

Also in attendance were two of Butter’s daughters, Sandy (Shields) Walk and Nicky (Shields) Cohoe, Joe Truax, son of Frank Truax, also an original team member, and, John McGhee, son of Kenneth McGhee.

The Seneca School Foundation congratulates Alec Oliver for his outstanding achievements at the Seneca School and for earning this scholarship. It also wishes him all the best during his four years at Grant Union High School and his college endeavors thereafter.
