During the June 8 Seneca School graduation ceremony, the Seneca School Foundation awarded not one, but two $500 scholarships to two extraordinarily deserving students of this year’s graduating Eighth Grade Class. In March, five students of the Class of 2004 applied for the Seneca Logger Memorial Scholarship. Those applying were Niles Branstetter, Brady Long, Sam Rawlins, Ryne Smith and Cheyenne Valade. To a person, the members of the scholarship selection committee expressed the difficulty they had determining who would actually receive scholarships. The competition was keen and the quality, demonstrated abilities, and clearly unlimited potential of all five students warranted a scholarship, but unfortunately there could only be two winners. Those two were Brady Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Long of Seneca and Sam Rawlins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Rawlins of Canyon City.Mrs. Virginia Widing, daughter of the late Mr. Julius Farmer, traveled from her home in Molalla, Oregon to make this second annual presentation of the scholarships to this year’s winners in memory of her father. Mr. Farmer was one of the original members of the Seneca Loggers Softball Team of the 1930’s whom the Scholarship Fund commemorates. Following her very moving and thoughtful comments, Mrs. Widing presented the two winners with certificates, each representing a $500 scholarship. The actual funds will be deposited in savings accounts for use once each student has successfully completed the first semester in the colleges of their choice. She presented certificates of honorable mention to Cheyenne Valade, Ryne Smith and Niles Branstetter for their outstanding performance as students and as scholarship candidates. This year’s scholarships were made possible through contributions from the families of three of the original members of the Seneca Loggers Softball Team, Lloyd (Butter) Shields, now living in Bend, Oregon, the late Frank Truax, and the late Kenneth McGhee. The Seneca School Foundation congratulates all five stars of the Class of 2004 for their outstanding achievements at the Seneca School and their performance during the scholarship competition. It also wishes them all the best during their four years at Grant Union High School and their college endeavors thereafter.
